How to reset your Gmail password

Every now and then, you want or need to change your password, whether you've forgotten the old one or just feel like it's time to change it. In this article, we'll show you how to change your Gmail password, on desktop, on Android, and on iOS.

From the desk

When you have logged into your Gmail account and the Gmail inbox page, click on your profile photo at the top left and go to "Manage your Google account".

Manage your Google account

When you are on the account management page, you need to select "Personal Information" on the left side and click on it.

Personal information

The last option in the first box here has to do with your password and tells you when you last changed it. To change it now, you need to click anywhere in the password box.

Click to change Gmail your password

You will now be prompted to re-enter your current password to verify that you are the account owner. This is for security reasons: in case you have left your account connected somewhere, no one other than you can change your password.

Verify your old password

Finally, you must enter your new password twice. Remember to choose a strong password and not to use the same password on different websites; your Facebook password must not be the same as your Gmail password.

Create your new password

Tip: a strong password should be as long as possible. Passwords must be a minimum of 10 characters long, but the longer the better. A strong password must also contain a combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Passwords should not consist of a single word, "Password1!" is not safe. Avoid your own name or the name of a pet or child, and instead go for something impossible to guide.

From Android

To change your Gmail password on Android, you must first click on the hamburger menu at the top of the search bar. Then select the "Settings" option near the bottom.

Setup button

You will see a list of all the accounts you have signed in to; click where you want to change the password. When you have clicked on the account you want to edit, select the "Manage your Google account" option below your email address.

Once you are in your Google account settings, go to the "Personal Information" tab and tap on the password box in the middle of the page.

Personal information

Enter your password to verify that you are the account owner, just as you would on a desktop computer.

Verify your old password

Then set your new password. Remember to pick something safe and hard to guess!

Create your new password

From iOS

To change your Gmail password on iOS, click on your profile photo in the upper left and select "Manage your Google account."

You will need to enter your current password to verify that you are the account owner and then you can enter your new password.

Verify your old password

Once you've submitted your new password, you're good to go.
